Photographers using Squarespace | 5 Best examples and minimal templates

These are two of our favourite topics, because as a business we started out with a major passion for photography which we combine together with our minimalist website services .. which of course to this day remains (check out our Services page). So, if you’re a photographer thinking of using Squarespace, let's run through why you’re going to take major benefits from building a minimal website on the platform (with 5 great examples!).

Squarespace offers beautiful templates for specific uses, and one of them being for photography businesses. But remember, you can completely customise these templates to make them your own!

Your minimally designed homepage should consist of your best imagery and work (ok sorry .. we know as photographers you’re fully aware of this!). Not too many, just a few based on your creative needs, and enough to be able to speak out to your ideal clientele.

Your photography portfolio can be displayed so beautifully on Squarespace sites for your customers to see, and you can very easily increase the amount of white space around your photographs as well as reduce all other irrelevant clutter.

Why use Squarespace?

Photographers using Squarespace

The platform has done a brilliant job in providing an all in one service for its users. Unlike other platforms, when you use Squarespace you don’t have to worry about plugins or any other software. No need to do any other research and looking elsewhere for functions you think you may need.

As a photography business looking to showcase your portfolio and services, the built in features will contain the basics that you need to be able to put a website together.

For this reason, Squarespace can be good to use if you’re a complete beginner to website design.

Quite simply put, when using Squarespace all you need to do to begin, is choose a template you like.

Best Squarespace Template for Photographers

When you have a look through the Squarespace templates, they scream minimalism and elegance. Can you see why we chose Squarespace?

When it comes to choosing the best template for your business, firstly you’re able to browse by the type of business/website (but not be limited by these .. this is more of a good guide). You can then view the best templates for the photography industry.

One of the reasons that you should not feel limited by the suggested templates, is because (and as explained in this post) on Squarespace you can use content blocks to completely customise the site based on your creative needs. As Squarespace tells you on their page, the templates are a starting point, if you like.

Before you go ahead and decide to purchase (either by monthly or an annual subscription), you can preview all the various templates you’re interested in. You can also view their demo site which is great because it enables you to have a vision as to what yours may look like.

Examples of Minimalist Squarespace Photography Sites

The following websites have been found and chosen by us because of their stunning minimal layouts. The way these awesome photographers and businesses have showcased their work is so unique and hopefully the varied styles can give an indication of how customisable Squarespace websites are.

Disclaimer: The following designs are not ours and we take NO credit for them! They are just examples that we’ve found and loved from Google searches.

    Jared Polin

The first site we would like to show is by Jared Polin, site: Jared Polin

The homepage of this website is kept clean, but so effective. The first thing you see is examples of work from the artist’s portfolio, as well as two main calls to action. That's it. There isn’t much text, but the photography does all of the talking.

    Chelsea Northrup

The second minimally designed website is by Chelsea Northrup, and the site is: Chelsea Northrup

Her website is clean and concise. The homepage shows the three categories that her work falls under, and this is also her Portfolio. It's simple and elegant, with plenty of white space and a minimal primary navigation.

    Manny Ortiz

Manny Ortiz has created a beautiful website, site: Manny Ortiz.

His homepage showcases his portrait Portfolio, with a separate page for his wedding photography Portfolio. His primary navigation is kept minimal, and uses plenty of white space to draw attention to the important content.

    Mark Denney

The Mark Denney website is slightly different with beautiful landscape photography. Site: Mark Denney Photography.

He has kept his homepage divided into sections, with the first section linking to his Gallery. The bottom of the page has plenty of white/negative space. The designer has also kept a fixed navigation as the user scrolls down the page, to remind the user of the next action to take.

    Mike Kelley

Below is last but definitely, and by no means the least. Website by Mike Kelley, site: Mike Kelley.

This business offers a different photography style to the previous, whereby Mike Kelley does a lot of beautiful architectural photography. The Portfolio is categorised into types. The Homepage is kept minimal, with a different style to many, because the Primary and Secondary navigations are listed side by side. It also consists of a slideshow of his chosen work to be displayed here.

There is a similarity between all of these great websites. They have no irrelevant content that takes the focus away from the artist’s work. The homepages of the websites are kept short, again only taking the user to where they need to go next. Which in all cases, is to the Gallery/Portfolio and the About/Contact page.
